He received his B.Sc. in Physics from Middle East Technical University (METU) in 1968 and an M.S. from the same department in 1971. In the same year, he joined Marquette University (USA) as a research assistant, where he pursued doctoral studies in Materials Science. He also conducted research at the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory, earning the Arthur J. Schmitt Foundation Grant, and completed his Ph.D. in 1975.

Upon returning to METU, he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1981 and Full Professor in 1989. He also served as a Fulbright Professor at Marquette University and Saginaw Valley State University between 1988–1999. At METU, he contributed extensively to the Scientific Research Committee, the Micro and Nano Technology Graduate Program, and held leadership roles in the Solid-State Science Division and Doctoral Committee.

His research has focused on the structural, mechanical, and electromagnetic properties of advanced materials such as superconductors, ferromagnets, silicates, and ultrahigh-temperature ceramics. He established the XRD and Superconductivity Laboratories at METU, played a key role in developing the Central Research Laboratory, supervised numerous M.S. and Ph.D. theses, and led nationally and internationally funded research projects.

He worked at METU until 2011, then continued at Istanbul Aydın University until 2023. Since February 2024, he has been a member of the Faculty of Engineering at Ostim Technical University. He has published 77 SCI-indexed articles, presented at many international conferences, and his work has been cited in more than 1,500 scientific publications.
